Here are a list of books and resources that have helped us and others to grow in our/their faith and living out The Call to Love, Excellence and Truth. We recommend these based on our personal experiences but do note also that suggestions here are not endorsements. We are not endorsing teachers or ministries but rather recommending individual books and resources.

These recommendations are not 100% endorsement of the authors views, or standpoint on all matters. It is rare, even in Christian circles that we will agree with 100% of another believer’s point of view. Yet, deferring points of view, when discussed lovingly, will help us to be sharpened in our faith and practice.

We believe these books to be valuable in part or as a whole, and we hope you find these beneficial in coming to Salvation in Jesus Christ or your maturing as a Disciple of Christ.

How to be a Great Boss

In How to Be a Great Boss, Gino Wickman and René Boer reveal how leaders can transform disengaged employees into motivated, high-performing teams. Building on lessons from Traction, the authors present a clear, actionable framework for becoming a great boss; one who inspires accountability, productivity, and enthusiasm. The book outlines proven tools used by over 30,000 managers across industries, teaching readers how to hire and retain great people, manage time effectively, and balance leadership with management. It introduces five key leadership practices and five management practices that drive success, along with strategies for fostering strong relationships and addressing underperformance. Ultimately, Wickman and Boer show that great bosses don’t just manage work, they develop people and create an environment where everyone can bring their A-game every day.

Good to Great

In Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap… and Others Don’t, Jim Collins explores why certain companies successfully transition from being good to truly great and sustain that greatness over time. Based on extensive research, Collins identifies key traits shared by these standout organizations, including disciplined people, disciplined thought, and disciplined action. Core concepts include the Level 5 Leader (humble yet driven leaders), the Hedgehog Concept (focusing on what you can be the best at), and the Flywheel Effect (how consistent effort creates momentum). Collins also warns against the Doom Loop, where companies chase quick fixes instead of long-term principles. Ultimately, Good to Great teaches that greatness is not a function of circumstance rather, it’s a matter of conscious choice and disciplined execution.

Topgrading

In the revised edition of Topgrading, Bradford Smart emphasizes that organizational success depends more on people than on strategy. He reveals that nearly half of all hiring decisions are mistakes, but companies using his Topgrading method have achieved hiring success rates of 90% or higher. The book outlines a proven system for identifying, hiring, and developing A-level talent while coaching B players to reach top performance. Drawing from thousands of interviews and case studies, Smart provides practical tools for building high-performing teams. His message is clear: businesses thrive or fail based on their talent, and only leaders committed to excellence and accountability can create truly great organizations.
